by FKR staff

Soseki (1867-1916), a popular writer of the Meiji era, came to Matsuyama in 1895 to teach. The experience led to one of his most popular novels, Botchan. In the mind of many Japanese, the city and Dogo hot spring are associated with the novel. A large wooden building of the spa is known as a model of the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki’s animation movie, Spirited Away.
The tangerine-like citrus is called mikan, or mandarin orange; one of many the rich nature offers. For more about Ehime, please see these sites; Japan Guide, Japan National Tourism Organization, Ehime Tourism Information, Tourism Shikoku, Matsuyama, Japan External Trade Organization.
